J. Kiss_S. Duzs Wedding.GIF  A portion of a much larger print of the wedding of Janos Kish and Zsuzsana Duzs on May 4th, 1904.

Szuerte, Hungary~Strumkovka, Ukraine Map.jpg   Home town of Janos Kis was Szuerte, Ung Medgye, Hungary. After the Russian invasion of  WWII, the border was changed, putting it inside of the Ukriane.    It was then renamed Strumkovka. If I’ve got it right, Strumkivka is the Ukrainian spelling, Strumkovka the Russian.

Map of Janos Kis's home town of Szurte, Ung Var Megye 1-380,000   1897.JPG   An 1897 map of Ung Medgye, Hungary which includes towns by the names that they were known as when Janos Kis and Zsuzsana Duzs arrived in the United States of America. This map was copied, plasticized, and given to Alan Hackett by Frank Nagy. Frank’s wife, Eileen (Nagy) Nagy, worked with Alan for many years and her father was the pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Flint. Rev. Nagy officiated at the funeral of Janos Kish in 1957. Eileen gave a copy of her father’s notes for that service to Alan, as well.

*** Margaret Ur later married John Urban; Susie (Kish) Hackett recounted, “John (Urban) was our milkman on Leith St. He’s the one that Steve (Kish) used to ride away with on John’s rounds and we wouldn’t know where he was. One time Steve came home and mother was so angry with him for worrying her so, that she was going to go after him with a wooden spoon. Of course,  Joe (his brother), being the peace-keeper, stood in between them, so that Steve wouldn’t get it.” (Steve was also known to go off with the Balkan Bakery delivery man on his rounds).

****John Kish’s best friend was Albert Ur, brother of Margaret and Elizabeth Ur.

Jess Kish and Louis Toth  These two are said to be in front of the Kish family vehicle. Jess’ sister, Susie (Kish), and her husband, Donald Hackett lived up above Louis’ parents’ home in an upstairs apartment when the Hacketts’ were first married. This is the place that Susie would complain about in later years because it was very difficult to monitor little first-born Carol in the backyard below.
