Beth was born in Weston (Toronto), Ontario and grew up in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. After graduation from Fordson H.S., she acquired her B.A. and M.A. in Education from Michigan State University, more recently her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Oakland University. She taught for 19 years at Durand H.S. in Durand, Michigan and has been a part of Health, Safety, and Nutrition Services at the Genesee Intermediate School District since 1995, most recently as Director of Headstart. Having married Alan in 1979, together they raised two wonderful daughters, Kathryn and Meredith, during their 35 year union. She had a passion for teaching and program development which she pursued over her entire career. She sat on numerous committees which benefitted the growth and health of many people throughout the state. During her long career she did everything from teaching and administrating reproductive health and life skills, to using her extraordinary grant writing talents for the funding and administration of a great number of education and health related programs. She was an award-winning dress maker and designer, loved to both learn and share her knowledge with anyone she thought might benefit from it, and was an accomplished culinary artist. She thrived on acquiring many cultural experiences while traveling the world, in particular to her ancestral homes of Wales and Scotland to visit extended family. She served on the Vestry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church during her long devotion to that community. She thoroughly enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending time with her loving family. Although she has departed this world, she will be a part of us for eternity. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Alan, daughters, Kathryn and Meredith, mother, Joyce MacKinnon, uncle, Claude Browning, aunt, Muriel Hatton, brothers, David (Mary Ann) and Donald (Kim) MacKinnon, nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, John MacKinnon. Your condolences may be shared with the family at swartzfuneralhomeinc.com
